After a second day full of activities at the BISMUN Conference and a great pub night in the historical center, the SPECPOL delegates continued their work in setting the principles of space colonization. The committee had been very productive and had already prepared two working drafts.
China and America, with everyone else`s consensus, established that the two working papers should merge in a single document. The delegates` negotiations regarding an agency specialized in outer space issues were followed by the very important subject of debris in space. Moreover, they underlined the importance of protecting the environment on Earth as well as in space.
In addition to the major points former deliberated, the delegates expressed again their concerns regarding security, taking into consideration the significance of peace between nations. Nevertheless, China pointed out the necessity of using weapons. The value of weapons on this matter is given by natural threats such as asteroids and other outer space dangerous phenomena. Concerning using weapons in offensive purposes during conflicts, on one hand it is still debatable, but on the other hand arming is an object of international prohibition.
The delegation of the U.S.A together with the ones of India and Germany made a press statement stating the major objectives and achievements of the committee. They also expressed the intention to join forces with other committees in order to succeed regulating and implementing practical measures.
As the SECPOL delegates have emphasized, cooperation and responsibility is of utmost importance when planning the colonization of space. The ultimate purpose of this enterprise is the perpetuation of the species, regardless of nation or race, but in order to reach this target, agreement and solidarity are needed. We expect that an accord will be reached in the following days, succeeded by the presentation of the motion.
