Have you ever asked yourself how difficult it can be to decide whether a person is guilty or not, what punishment does the person deserve – considering what social danger society faces through the actions of that individual and which is the most appropriate solution meant to satisfy directly both society and individual? What about the feelings implied, the subjective perspective which can always interfere in front of every single case or even the possibility of just being mistaken?
If this may seem hard, take a look on the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. In comparison with ordinary judges, the “World Court” has to handle an overwhelming responsibility at an international level. They do not only decide one’s fate, but nations’ fate. They do not only pursue a single interest, but the general interest, the one which is expected to target each citizen by following precisely the rule of law.
So, are they supernatural? Are they even human beings? Yes, they definitely are! For many of us, they may appear as people made of stone that are not capable of sharing their fears, worries or emotions. But, studying their grimaces, their facial mimic, you just realize how normal those people are. Their raised eyebrows when hearing about unjustified acts involving illegal imprisonment, terrorism or violations of the jurisdiction and sovereignty of a country, their trembling voice when asking about extremely serious charges or their gentle smile when finding a solution for each statement in part are just some of the numerous examples which can easily betray every BISMUN delegate from ICJ committee!
