Today’s Committee Session held by the COPUOS Committee treated the subject of space sustainability. The Delegates deserve a round of applause, for they have greatly cooperated to create a draft resolution that would ensure, as the Delegation of the United States of America has stated, “the safe use of space by our children”.
Furthermore, the representative of Brazil “recommends the banning of the use of nuclear weapons in space”, while the Ambassador of Argentina reminds his fellow Committee colleagues that some states refer to such weapons as “harmless” and that “it has gone too far. We have to prevent an arms race in outer space”.
USA takes the floor again to underline the fact that “we are not in DISEC” and that the discussion should go back from nuclear weapons to the sustainability of space. In addition, Japan congratulates the Delegates, as well as the Signatories, also explaining that “COPUOS cannot cover subjects as demilitarization”.
As Ukraine encourages the Committee’s diplomats to move forward to the other clauses of the resolution, the Delegation of India outlines the fact that “cooperation is paramount here”. Nevertheless, China proposes a moderated caucus with the duration of 15 minutes, with the duration of 1 minute per delegate, in order to discuss or suggest amendments to other clauses of the draft resolution. The proposal passes with the majority of votes. Thus, the topic of space satellites and the amount of information they can deliver came into discussion.
All in all, I believe that if there is a Committee that has the potential to find a solution to the issue of world peace, then it is the COPOUS Committee! You need not worry, for the Delegates of this Committee are striving hard to implement methods that will preserve and keep the outer space as safe as possible for the use of the next generations.
Tick-tock, tick-tock, Delegates! The final Committee Session is approaching rapidly. Are you ready?
